  1. Boil the water

Fill the saucepan halfway with water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Add a pinch of salt.

  2. Cook the pasta

Drop the penne into the boiling water and let it cook for 10 minutes, stirring now and then.

  3. Drain the pasta

Tip the pasta into the colander and save a little cooking water.

  4. Cook the onion

Chop the onion and cook it in the skillet with the olive oil over medium heat for 3 minutes.

Tip · To keep the onion from burning, turn the heat down if needed and stir often.
  5. Add the garlic and tomatoes

Crush the garlic and add it to the onions. Add the peeled tomatoes and crush them with the spoon. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

  6. Season the sauce

Add the dried basil, salt and pepper. Mix well.

  7. Toss the pasta and sauce

Add the drained pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Stir, adding a little cooking water if needed.

Tip · If the sauce is too thick, add a little pasta water to loosen it.
  8. Serve with Parmesan

Divide the pasta among plates and sprinkle with the grated Parmesan.
