Two free planners

Popotam or Mealime: a free meal planner, in French?

Mealime has announced it will shut down on October 21, 2026, and delete its users' data. Until then, it's the only comparison on this site where both services do the same job. Both are free, both let you buy wherever you want. What sets them apart comes down to two things: the language, and how the menu gets put together.

Before comparing

Pick from a catalog, or get a menu put together

Mealime starts from a recipe catalog and helps you pick from it: the site announces more than 200 customization options to filter by diet and foods you skip, then produces a grocery list sorted by category. It's a well-tested service, claimed by more than 4.5 million users, and its basic version is free.

Popotam doesn't pick, it composes: the menu is written on demand from your constraints, either by Popotam's model or by your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini account. Two weeks you ask for never give the same result.

The other difference is less technical but often decisive: Mealime is a North American product. Its recipes, ingredients and units follow Anglo-Saxon habits, and the app's language isn't announced as available in French. Popotam speaks French, counts in euros and sorts the list by the aisles of a French supermarket.

How to read this table. “No” means “not offered according to the service's public info as of the check date”: you can't prove a feature doesn't exist, but you can say so honestly. “Not verified” means we couldn't find an official source, and we'd rather say so than guess.

The right tool depends on you

Who each one is made for

Popotam is the right pick if…

  • You cook in French, with French supermarket ingredients and a budget in euros.
  • You want a menu put together for you rather than a catalog to filter, and a different result every week.
  • You want to be able to use your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini subscription instead of the tool's model.
  • You want next week to get ready on its own, on the day you pick.

Mealime is the right pick if…

  • You read English with no effort and North American recipes suit you perfectly.
  • You'd rather have a proven catalog, where every recipe has already been cooked by thousands of people, than a menu written on demand.
  • You miss the hands-free mode for following a recipe while you cook when you use other tools.
  • You want a product that's been around for years, with the track record and polish that come with it.
No sugarcoating

Strengths and limits of each

What Popotam does well

  • Free with no catch: no subscription, no ads, no commission on your groceries.
  • You shop wherever you want, farmers' market and local producers included.
  • Nearly thirty settings: cooking time on weekdays and weekends, express evenings, available equipment, favorite cuisines, spice level, cooking skill, nutrition goal, budget, foods you skip, pantry items to use up, time slots to plan.
  • The diet you ask for is checked dish by dish before anything shows up, not just requested from the model.
  • Two ways to generate: Popotam handles it itself in about thirty seconds, or you use your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini account.
  • A personal cookbook: the dishes you keep outlive the week, and you can find them again with filters and search.
  • Next week can generate itself, on the day you pick, with nothing to hook up.
  • A meal plan can be shared live: what one person changes shows up for everyone else within seconds, no account or invite needed.
  • You can plan the whole month in one go, four weeks ahead, and its groceries come as a single list where an item used across several weeks shows up only once.

What Popotam doesn't do

  • No ingredient delivery: it's a planner, not a grocery service.
  • You can't order your groceries from Popotam, no store chain is a partner.
  • The prices shown are estimates, based on average in-store prices (Open Prices), not the actual prices of a given store.
  • No iPhone app: on iOS, Popotam runs in the browser and can be added to your home screen (the Android app is on Google Play).
  • With no account, access depends on a secret link: lose it without having left an email address, and you lose your meal plan.

What Mealime does well

  • Free, with no partner store chain: you shop wherever you want.
  • More than 200 customization options announced, including diets and foods you skip.
  • Grocery list automatically sorted by category.
  • A hands-free mode to follow the recipe while you cook.

What Mealime doesn't do

  • The service shuts down on October 21, 2026, and personal data will be deleted: any meal plan or recipes kept there need to be saved before then.
  • The service is in English: the app's language isn't stated on the site, and the recipes are designed for a North American audience.
  • Ingredients and units follow Anglo-Saxon habits, which makes grocery shopping in France harder.
  • No AI generation is announced: you build from a catalog.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Mealime available in French?

The official site doesn't state the app's languages, so we can neither confirm nor deny it. What's certain is that the service is North American: recipes, ingredients and units of measurement follow Anglo-Saxon habits, which makes shopping at a French supermarket harder.

Which free meal planner should you pick in France?

For grocery shopping done in France, a French-language tool spares you constant unit conversion and ingredients you can't find. Popotam builds menus in French, counts in euros and sorts the list by the aisles of a French supermarket, for free and with no account.

Does Mealime use artificial intelligence?

We haven't verified it on an official source, and we'd rather say so than assume. What the site announces is a recipe catalog and more than 200 customization options to filter it. Popotam, for its part, puts the menu together on demand, with its own model or with your own AI account.

Can you bring your Mealime recipes into Popotam?

Yes, for free and with no account. On a computer, a “Bring to Popotam” button, which you drag into your browser's bar, brings over in one click the meal plan recipes, favorites, personal recipes, diet and allergies, until the shutdown on October 21, 2026. On a phone, Popotam reads the PDFs the Mealime app saves, even after the shutdown. The recipes arrive translated into French and converted to grams.

Does Popotam have an app to install?

On Android, yes: a free app on Google Play, with the same meal plan as on the site. On iPhone, no: Popotam runs in the browser, on a computer as well as on a phone, and can be added to your home screen. Mealime offers mobile apps, which is still an advantage on iPhone if you really want an installed app.
