Two ways to organize your week

Popotam or Jow: which option to plan your meals?

Both put a menu together and turn it into a grocery list. The whole difference comes down to one question: do you want your groceries to go into a cart at a partner store chain, or to shop wherever you like?

Before comparing

The real difference is a business model

Jow describes itself as “the recipe app that does all your grocery shopping”: you link your account to Auchan, Carrefour, Chronodrive, Courses U, Intermarché or Monoprix, and the menu you pick becomes a cart ready to pay. It's a grocery service as much as a recipe tool, and that link with the store chains is what funds it.

Popotam earns nothing. No store chain pays it, it shows no ads and sells no data. That's why, and not out of virtue, it lets you buy anywhere: it has nobody to send you to.

The rest of the differences flow from there. Jow optimizes checkout, Popotam optimizes putting the week together. One saves you the grocery step, the other leaves you free to pick your store.

How to read this table. “No” means “not offered according to the service's public info as of the check date”: you can't prove a feature doesn't exist, but you can say so honestly. “Not verified” means we couldn't find an official source, and we'd rather say so than guess.

The right tool depends on you

Who each one is made for

Popotam is the right pick if…

  • You shop somewhere other than Jow's six partner store chains: at the farmers' market, from a local producer, at a non-partner chain or at the corner store.
  • You want to fine-tune your menus: cooking time on weekdays and weekends, available equipment, favorite cuisines, nutrition goal, time slots to plan.
  • You have a diet, intolerances or allergies, and you want them checked in the result rather than just requested.
  • You'd rather not create any account, and use your own AI if you already pay for one.

Jow is the right pick if…

  • You already shop through pickup or delivery at one of the partner store chains: Jow saves you from putting your cart together at all.
  • You want the real price of your cart, the store chain's, rather than an estimate.
  • The step that matters to you is checkout, not putting the menu together.
No sugarcoating

Strengths and limits of each

What Popotam does well

  • Free with no catch: no subscription, no ads, no commission on your groceries.
  • You shop wherever you want, farmers' market and local producers included.
  • Nearly thirty settings: cooking time on weekdays and weekends, express evenings, available equipment, favorite cuisines, spice level, cooking skill, nutrition goal, budget, foods you skip, pantry items to use up, time slots to plan.
  • The diet you ask for is checked dish by dish before anything shows up, not just requested from the model.
  • Two ways to generate: Popotam handles it itself in about thirty seconds, or you use your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini account.
  • A personal cookbook: the dishes you keep outlive the week, and you can find them again with filters and search.
  • Next week can generate itself, on the day you pick, with nothing to hook up.
  • A meal plan can be shared live: what one person changes shows up for everyone else within seconds, no account or invite needed.
  • You can plan the whole month in one go, four weeks ahead, and its groceries come as a single list where an item used across several weeks shows up only once.

What Popotam doesn't do

  • No ingredient delivery: it's a planner, not a grocery service.
  • You can't order your groceries from Popotam, no store chain is a partner.
  • The prices shown are estimates, based on average in-store prices (Open Prices), not the actual prices of a given store.
  • No iPhone app: on iOS, Popotam runs in the browser and can be added to your home screen (the Android app is on Google Play).
  • With no account, access depends on a secret link: lose it without having left an email address, and you lose your meal plan.

What Jow does well

  • Your groceries go straight into an online cart: that's the step Popotam doesn't do.
  • Six partner store chains announced: Auchan, Carrefour, Chronodrive, Courses U, Intermarché, Monoprix.
  • A catalog announced at more than 5,000 recipes, with servings announced from €0.89.
  • The cart price is the store chain's price, so it's real, not estimated.

What Jow doesn't do

  • The service revolves around its partner store chains: outside that list, the main benefit disappears.
  • Shopping at the farmers' market, from a local producer or at a non-partner store chain falls outside the intended flow.
  • An account linked to a store is needed for the main use.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Can Popotam replace Jow?

For putting the menu together, the grocery list and customization, yes, and with more settings. For automatically filling the cart at a partner store chain, no: Popotam has no partnership and isn't looking for one. If that step is why you use Jow, no free-roaming planner will replace it.

Can you use Popotam with grocery pickup or delivery?

Not directly: Popotam doesn't order anything for you, it has no partner store chain. You get a list sorted by aisle that you copy into the pickup service of your choice. That's one more step than Jow, in exchange for total store freedom.

Does Popotam offer video recipes like Jow?

No. Popotam writes the recipe step by step when you ask for it, in text: equipment, steps, tips, with a cooking mode that shows one step at a time and timers. There's no filmed catalog.

Do you have to create an account on Popotam?

No, and there isn't one at all. Your meal plan lives online, behind a secret link. You can leave an email address so we can send you that link again if you lose it, but nothing forces you to.
